Joyce Yager, PhD

Earth and marine science for a thriving life on our planet.

Cornell Atkinson Postdoctoral Science Fellow

Environmental Defense Fund, United States of America

About Joyce

Dr. Joyce Yager is an Earth and marine scientist who studies marine biogeochemistry, or how the chemistry of the ocean impacts marine animals, global climate, and is altered by marine life.

She is currently an Atkinson Postdoc Fellow at the Environmental Defense Fund and Cornell University. Her current research focuses on how fish that live in the ocean twilight (or mesopelagic) zone impact the global carbon cycle. She also works on the risks and benefits of marine carbon dioxide removal tech to marine ecosystems and communities living near potential projects. She is also interested in how marine science can be conducted by more people who don't traditionally think of themselves as scientists, and started a project for community-led invertebrate monitoring in Whakaraupō Lyttelton Harbour.

Joyce's past work investigated changing ocean chemistry and climate in deep time, which shapes her work on the global carbon cycle. Joyce is passionate about science communication and making science welcoming for all.

Joyce bounces between the US and Aotearoa, New Zealand and fills much of her time playing outside with friends and making art.

Research Themes

Science for action

Joyce's research focuses on understanding the role marine life plays in regulating global climate and supporting ecosystems that help the planet thrive.
